Catholic Schools Week 2012
During the week of January 29 through February 3, we took the time to highlight some of the wonderful features of Catholic Schools in general and to celebrate the extraordinary qualities of St. Alphonsus-St. Patrick School specifically. The theme of Catholic Schools Week this year was “Faith, Academics, Service” and this is truly our mandate always here at St. Als St. Pats. While academics are the key essential, we also find ways to practice our Faith and to be of service every day. Added into that mix are ways to make learning fun.
The week began with Open House on Sunday. Our classrooms and all of our extracurricular activities and athletic teams were on display along with a Book Fair, a spectacular Art Fair and an amazing array of student inventions from the Invention Convention. Every day during the week, there were special activities highlighting the themes of Faith, Academics and Service. On Monday, students wore tie-dye apparel or ties in recognition of being “tied to Christ”. There were partner dances in the gym during the day and Family Reading Night in the evening. Students also played Bible Bingo or Bible Trivia to test their bible knowledge. On Tuesday, students participated in a school-wide service project by creating placemats and toiletry kits for the PADS shelter. Wednesday was a day to honor and treat our wonderful students. They were allowed to come to school in pajamas and received a special treat from their teachers. In the afternoon, they were entertained by fellow students in the Talent Show. On Thursday, we tied into our Faithful Citizenship theme with patriotic dress and a patriotic sing-a-long. The whole week was tied together on Friday with our special all school liturgy celebrating Faith, Academics and Service. Teachers were treated to a special lunch hosted by the FSA and students tried their luck at Bingo to close out the week.
Faith, Academics, Service ------ just three of the many things we have to celebrate at St. Als St. Pats School!
Talent Show 2012
On Wednesday, February 1, some very talented Celtics entertained the school community at an afternoon show and family and friends during an evening show. Students in grades 4 through 8 presented a wide variety of performances to the delight of their classmates and families. We had singers, dancers, gymnasts, and instrumentalists to name a few of the talents displayed. There was also a great deal of collaboration evident in the costume development and choreography for the routines. There is no question that our Celtics are a talented group! Just below this article you will find a video montage of pictures and video clips from the show………
Invention Convention 2012
The St. Alphonsus-St. Patrick School Invention Convention was held on Thursday, January 26th. Students from 7th and 8th grade participated in the event. They began developing their inventions in science class in October. The inventions were on display at this year's Open House and what a display it was! The gym was filled with ingenuity and creative problem solving. The winners of this year’s Invention Convention were as follows. There was a tie for 4th place Honorable Mention: Cameron (7th grade) for his Ipad Slip-Grip and Michael (7th grade) for his Salt-O-Matic. Third place was awarded to Kristen and Kate (8th grade) for Split the Pot---not a fundraiser but rather a unique cooking pot with a divider so that two different foods could be cooked in just one pot. Amanda (7th grade) won Second Place for the Ready Pedi Sandal, sure to make pedicures easier. Finally, first place honors went to Anna R. (8th grade) for her Step-n-Shop. Anna’s invention was a special retractable step stool attached to a shopping cart so that shorter shoppers could have an easy way to reach items on high shelves. The student inventions came complete with market research and a marketing plan. Take a look at some photos of our inventors with their creations. Many were amazing ideas brought to life by some brilliant young scientists!
Spelling Stars
In preparation for the Regional Spelling Competition, some of the best spellers of St. Alphonsus-St. Patrick’s School participated in our school spelling bee which began on Friday, January 20 and finished on Monday, January 23. Cheered on by their classmates, students from grade 4-8 did their best to spell some very challenging words! Participants from Grade 4 included William, Patrick, MaryAnn, Jennye and Andrew. The Fifth grader spellers were Ryan B., Alex, Aiste, James, Natalia, and Michael. From sixth grade, the challengers were Bruno, Ben, Thomas, Makayla, and Dana. The seventh grade super spellers included Megan A.. Alyssa, Bridget, Hunter, Phinu and Danny. Eighth grade competitors were Brian, Gina, Jake, Jenna, and Nicolet.
Every one of these students showed poise and spelling prowess as they stepped up to the microphone to spell a number of difficult words. The Spelling Bee had to be suspended on Friday afternoon for lack of time and was concluded on Monday with the remaining five spellers (Bruno and Dana from 6th, Bridget and Danny from 7th, and Gina from 8th) competing to be the champion for our school. Dana finished in third place, Bruno in 2nd place, and Danny became our new Spelling Champion after spelling all of his words correctly through 15 rounds and finally spelling “extrapolate” for his championship word! We are proud to have Dan represent our school at the Regional Spelling Bee in early February.
Confirmation Saints
As our 8th graders journey toward their Confirmation, they have studied saints who will serve to inspire their lives. In computer class they have created digital posters about their chosen Confirmation Saint. Then they created a wikispace page so they could share their information with their classmates and with others. Take a moment to visit the 8th Grade Confirmation Saint Wikispace. You will learn about some new Saints that you may not have known about before, and you may learn some new information about other more familiar patrons.
LEGO Engineering Field Trip
From Wednesday, January 11 through Friday, January 13, the St. Alphonsus-St. Patrick School cafeteria was transformed into an engineering center. By a joint effort between the school and our Family School Association, all students in grades 1-8 were able to participate in an on-site LEGO engineering field trip. Children worked in teams of two with designated roles as builders and suppliers. The roles were switched with each turn of the page in their instruction “blueprints”. By working together and carefully following the instructions, the students were able to construct either a machine with an electric motor, a carousel, or a collision car depending upon their grade level. Each class had their own dedicated 75 minute session. The children had a great time working collaboratively to create a working mechanical system!
5th Grade Endangered Species
Our 5th graders do an extensive study of the animal kingdom and the biomes of the world that provide habitats for the various species. The students also learn all about how scientists classify creatures. As part of this science unit, the 5th graders created Glogsters or digital posters that focus on the members of the animal kingdom that are endangered. Their research included trying to find out why these species are having trouble surviving and ways that their habitats and ecosystems are being compromised. The glogsters were created as part of their computer classes and they have been gathered onto a wikispace by Mrs. Yakes so they can be easily viewed in one place. Please take some time to learn from the projects these 5th grade students have created! Click on this link to access the 5th Grade Endangered Species Wikispace.
Advent and Christmas at St. Als-St. Pats School
The weeks before Christmas at St. Als St. Pats School were filled with anticipation and activity! The children learned the meaning of Advent and experienced hopeful waiting for the Christ Child. In the spirit of generosity and Christmas kindness, every class adopted a needy family and collected gifts so that the joy of Christmas giving could be for everyone, no matter what their current circumstance. Others also contributed household items for these families. The students in Preschool through grade 5 and the Liturgy Choir spread Christmas joy with their beautiful program of Advent and Christmas music. The band students also performed a Christmas concert for parents and friends. Children enjoyed shopping with the elves----an experience hosted by our FSA that allowed the kids to select and purchase gifts that they could surprise their loved ones with on Christmas morning. Finally, the children celebrated with their classmates at parties hosted by their room moms. Enjoy this photo-video montage about all of these wonderful Advent and Christmas preparations and experiences at St. Alphonsus-St. Patrick School…….

7th Grade Christmas Giving Commercials
The 7th graders have been working on their podcasting skills and also doing some research on charitable organizations that offer ways for us to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. The students chose a charity they wanted to advertise and then researched the mission of that organization. They also used a site called Charity Navigator to decide if the organization spends most of their donations for the cause rather than for administrative costs. Then they worked either solo or with a partner to craft a "radio commercial" for the charity. As the students finish, Mrs. Yakes is gathering the commercials on a Wikispace so that everyone can listen to them. Please take the time to visit the 7th Grade Commercial Wikispace. If you wish to leave a comment, visit the Discussion page and please post your comment! Thank you! ![]()
Christmas Concert 2011
On Wednesday, December 14, the PreSchool, grades K-5 and the Liturgical Choir joined to present a Christmas concert for their parents and friends. Under the direction of Mr. Joe Martorano and accompanied by many talented musicians, the students sang a program of Advent and Christmas music designed to highlight the true meaning of the Christmas season. The lovely melodies and meaningful lyrics helped add meaning to our Advent of waiting for the Christ child.
Oxfam America Hunger Banquet
On Friday, December 9, the fourth through eighth grade students got a glimpse into the inequalities that exist in the world. Members of the National Junior Honor Society and its sponsors, Mrs. Raelyn Wall and Ms. Beth Burke, hosted a Hunger Banquet that has been developed by Oxfam America, an international relief and development organization that works to create lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and injustice. The Hunger Banquet is the signature event of Oxfam, and is designed to bring attention to poverty and hunger issues through first-hand experience and stories from around the world.
With the help of alumnus Maddie Wall, the members of the NJHS learned how to conduct the Hunger Banquet by experiencing it themselves first. Then they in turn hosted the experience for all of the fourth through eighth grade students. As students entered the school's cafeteria, they were given random slips of paper to determine their income levels. Groups were formed based on the latest statistics about the number of people living in poverty — 15 percent in the high-income tier, 35 percent in the middle-income and 50 percent in low-income. The underlying purpose was to get the students thinking about some of the inequalities that exist in the world and about how many people in the world live a life of extreme poverty just because of the culture, place or circumstances into which they were born.
Students in the high-income group were seated at a large table adorned with a table cloth and place settings. They were served large portions of salad, lasagna, bread and soda as most their classmates watched from the floor. Those assigned to the middle-income group received moderate portions of rice, beans and water — all meant to symbolize a simple, low-cost meal. The low-income group was forced to sit on the ground, and was only given small amounts of water and rice, which students had to scoop out of a large bowl using plastic cups. As the low-and middle-income students ate the last of their rice, the high-income table was served large pieces of red velvet cake with scoops of vanilla ice cream.
During the banquet and while waiting for whatever meal portion was their lot, the students shared information with each other about the character their card described. Students were allowed to share their reactions and reflections in a discussion at the end of the meal and after watching some very moving videos from Oxfam. Mrs. Wall encouraged the children to perhaps think of forgoing just one Christmas wish of their own and using the money to perhaps help Oxfam help someone else that is living in poverty. Ms. Burke, who narrated the activity, closed with a meaningful quote: "The one thing I would like you to remember is this: Everyone on earth has the same basic needs; it is only our circumstances—where we live and the culture into which we are born—that differ," she said. "Some of us are born into relative prosperity and security, while millions—through no choice of our own—are born into poverty."
In our Advent of waiting for the Christ child who came to save us all, this activity was a most fitting way for the students to think about one small way that they might be able to contribute to saving the world as well.
Irish Dance Champions!
Two of our 8th grade students, Martina and Kathryn, are very accomplished Irish Dancers. Over the Thanksgiving weekend, they participated in a competition called the Mid America Oireachtas (which means “gathering” in Gaelic) which was held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare. The Oireachtas involved dancers from seven states throughout the Midwest, competing in different age categories. Martina danced as a soloist in the Under 13 age category, and received 6th place out of 140 competitors. Kathryn danced as a soloist in the Under 14 age category. She placed 7th out of 105 dancers. Both girls qualified for Nationals which will take place in Chicago in July of 2012. The girls also both qualified to compete in the 2012 World Irish Dance Competition held in Belfast, Ireland in April of 2012. Kathryn is currently ranked 29th in the world in her age category and hopes to improve upon that in Belfast this spring! St. Alphonsus-St. Patrick School is very proud of these very talented students.
